Griffs get another guard

Add Dominique Raney to the crowded Canisius backcourt. The junior college transfer was on campus Monday and is expected to receive one of the Griffs’ two remaining scholarships.

Raney was listed as a freshman last year at Navarro College. His numbers weren’t great — 3.7 points and .77 assists per game — but ESPN recruiting scored him an 85, which is the highest a Canisius recruit has been rated since the scores started in 2006. The highest any Griff had previously been scored was an 80, given to both Alshwan Hymes and Chris Manhertz (Freddy Asprilla has four stars but score).

Signs also point to forward Tyrel Edwards joining the Griffs. Rumored to be joining the team for months, he tweeted he was in class today, told a friend he was in Buffalo, and, although it could be someone else, a “Tyrel Edwards” appears on the Canisius listserv (as do Raney, Jermaine Johnson, Phil Valenti, etc.).

Raney makes the seventh guard on the team, joining Billy Baron, Isaac Sosa, Harold Washington, Hymes, Reggie Groves and Johnson.

Hopefully the Jesuits will teach Edwards (aka Mr. SteelYourGirl) how to spell “steal” … unless he’s going for the double entendre that would fit the rest of his tweets. Mr. December 23rd has apparently since changed his Twitter handle.
