Canisius vs. St. Francis Brooklyn gameday 12/14/13

Canisius travels downstate for a nonconference meeting with St. Francis Brooklyn at 4 p.m. this afternoon for the front end of a two-game road trip.

The teams: Canisius: 6-3, 2-0 MAAC. RPI: 141. Streak: Won three in a row and five of last six.

St. Francis: 5-5, 0-0 NEC. RPI: 161. Streak: Lost two in a row and five of last eight, but that includes a 56-50 loss to Syracuse.

Previous game: Canisius beat UB, 69-55, on Wednesday at the First Niagara Center. The Griffs trailed for much of the game but finished on a 26-4 run.

St. Francis got pounded by new MAAC member Monmouth on Tuesday, 73-58. The Terriers trailed 43-22 at halftime.

About St. Francis: 6-foot-6, 230-pound junior forward Jalen Cannon leads the Terriers in scoring and rebounding at 14.5 points per game and 7.8 rebounds per game. Wayne Martin, a 6-6 freshman, scores 9.5 ppg. Both players shoot better than 50 percent from the field. Good games defensively from Jordan Heath and Chris Manhertz will go a long way.

St. Francis is coached by Glenn Braica.

Series history: The teams have played 10 times, but only twice since 1983, with Canisius winning in November 2009 and St. Francis winning in December 2010.

Noteworthy: St. Francis is near the bottom of the country in several offensive categories. When they score, they are competitive, but they’ve been held under 60 points six times, losing five of those games. The Terriers are 337th in scoring (62.5 ppg) and 325th in field goal percentage (.400). Canisius, by contrast, ranks 168th and 181st in those respective categories.

Immediate reactions will be posted at the conclusion of the game. Check out this Twitter list for Canisius hoops chatter and use #Griffs to join in the conversation.
