How it happened: This one was ugly. The Griffs were bad from the floor, worse from three-point range and not very effective on defense. St. Francis entered the game shooting 40 percent on field goals, one of the worst averages in the country. But Saturday, the Terriers were able to make half of their shots in the first half and 45.0 percent overall. Billy Baron led the Griffs with only 11 points as they fell to 6-4.

What it means: Last week, Siena coach Jimmy Patsos said if Canisius makes three pointers, it will win the MAAC. When the Griffs miss as bad as they did Saturday, they’re not going anywhere. Chris Perez and Jordan Heath made one three-pointer apiece, and the rest of the team was shut out from behind the arc. Canisius hit 2 of 13 treys, its worst percentage and lowest total of the year. Baron missed all four of his three-point attempts, marking the third time in his Canisius career (and second this year) that he didn’t hit a three.

Secondary scoring? There was hardly primary scoring — Baron made only four of his 15 shots and finished with 11 points. Perez missed 7 of his 9 shots and Zach Lewis had his second poor game in a row after exploding for 18 points against Siena. Chris Manhertz was the only player to make more than half of his shots, finishing with 9 points on a 4-for-5 night. St. Francis does play a slower pace, but Canisius made only 17 of 49 field goals (.347), the fewest number of field goals made and field goals attempted of the season.

Rebounding? Nothing against Baron here, but it’s never good when your point guard leads the team in rebounding. He had six boards while Manhertz and Heath had five. St. Francis grabbed 39 total to Canisius’ 28. Every Canisius opponent this year has pulled in at least 10 offensive rebounds.

Stats that were good: About the only thing Canisius did well was defend the three-ball, holding St. Francis to to 3 of 17 … The Griffs held the opponent’s leading scorer below his average for the third straight game … Josiah Heath got to the line six times, matching a career high.

Stats that were bad: Aside from what was already mentioned … no Canisius player had more than one offensive rebound … the team had only seven assists.

Notes: The Griffs are 1-3 as the road team, with the win coming at the First Niagara Center. St. Francis improved to 5-0 when scoring more than 60 points.
