By Nick Veronica

FINAL: Canisius 78, Marist 65. Canisius goes to 14-7, 8-2 MAAC. Marist 6-14, 3-7.

34.9: Baron checks out to a standing ovation. 38 points is his most ever in regulation.

42.0: Baron gets a layup and matches his career high with 38 points.

1:08: Just over a minute to go and some fans (students) are leaving. Guys, you’re supposed to stay until the end (always), but especially when you’re winning.

3:22: Zach Lewis spins and hits a nice fadeaway. Baron follows with a fast-break layup to get him to 36, two short of his career high.

3:42: Canisius up 70-55 at the U4 timeout. Baron has 34. Manhertz just checked out with 13 points and 9 rebounds, according to the live stats, which is one rebound short of back-to-back double-doubles.

6:12: Baron ends his drought — last bucket was at 15:56. He has 34 now.

6:35: Adam Kemp gets a loose ball but trips over his own guy, who was also on the floor, and falls out of bounds. Griffs take over up 66-53.

8:00: Four Marist players (Hart, Bowie, Lewis, Kemp) are in double digits, but the Red Foxes still trail by 11, 64-53.

9:20: Baron misses a long 3 but Manhertz collects the rebounds and puts it in, plus a foul. Gets that too, 60-47.

9:41: Bowie hits two free throws to bring it within 10, 57-47.

11:27: Perez feeds to Jordan Heath, who throws down a dunk. 55-41.

11:37: Baron’s court-length pass easily intercepted by Khallid Hart, who takes it right to the rack and draws a foul. He’ll shoot two out of the U12 timeout.

12:30: Marist presses after a bucket, Griffs break it with a series of passes. Zach Lewis hits a fade away. 53-40.

14:33: Perez hits a layup, 51-36. Pace picking up.

15:58: Baron hits a layup, now up to 32 points. His career high is 38 vs. Rider on Jan. 10. 49-34.

16:29: After Kemp’s free throws, Perez gets a shooter’s bounce on a turn-around jumper. 47-29 Canisius.

18:37: Baron gets a steal and throws it ahead for Chris Perez, who scores his first points of the night.

19:40: Adam Kemp goes in for an uncontested dunk. 38-26. Baron answers. 40-26.

19:52: Marist falls on a loose ball and yells for timeout. They get it, but they’re down to three timeouts with a lot of catching up to do.

Question from Twitter: What’s the most points a Canisius player has ever scored in a game? That would be 55 by Larry Fogle vs. Saint Peter’s, Feb. 9, 1974.

Halftime stats: Both teams are 9-for-22 shooting (40.9 percent), but Canisius has four more three-pointers and 10 more free throws. Rebounds are 15-15. Twelve turnovers for Marist, nine for Canisius. Baron is 6-11 shooting, 4 of 6 from three and 9 of 10 from the line for 25 points. Chavaughn Lewis has 12 points of 5 of 6.

HALFTIME: Canisius leads 38-24. Billy Baron has 25 points. Canisius closed the half on a 13-0 run.

2.5: Griffs get a steal in transition and Baron is fouled on a 3. He hits all three. 38-24.

13.4: Refs at the monitor looking at a foul but replay shows a fairly nice dive on Phil Valenti’s part. He hits 1 of 2, 35-24.

41.6: Baron hits a three right over Chavaughn Lewis. Lewis can’t believe it. Fans on their feet. 34-24 Canisius.

1:06: Back-to-back-to-back good plays for Manhertz: set a nice screen on Baron’s 3, drew a charge and then got a layup and 1 on offense. 31-24.

1:38: Baron drills a three, 28-24.

3:29: Chavaughn Lewis is silky. He’s been hitting with people in his face all day. Drains another tough shot.

3:56: Baron hits both free throws on a one-and-one, giving Canisius its largest lead of the night at 23-20.

3:56: Canisius leads 21-20 at the U4. Baron has 14 for CC, Lewis has 10 for Marist. Ten turnovers for Marist, 8 for CC.

4:13: C Lewis called for a travel as he goes to the hoop, Z Lewis in coverage.

5:30: Baron hits from the line to give Canisius its first lead since 2-0. 21-20.

6:22: Marist gets a shot to fall but not before the shot clock expired. Baron ties it with a 3, 20-20.

6:58: Some solid advice from our favorite fan in Section 2 as Chris Manhertz goes to the line: “Hit them!” Not sure Chris had thought of that. He gets one of two. 20-17.

7:13: Lewis hits both, 20-16 Marist.

7:13: Jordan Heath called for a foul as Lewis was going to the hoop. Heath got a lot of ball there. Like, a lot. Tough call.

8:17: Zach Lewis hits a very deep three-pointer to cut it to 16-14, the closest Canisius has been in a long time, but Lewis answers. 18-14.

8:51: Chavaughn Lewis hits a tough three to put Marist up 16-11. He has 6.

10:47: Zach Lewis drives and hits the floor hard. He hits one of two free throws, making it 14-9 Marist. Also the first player besides Baron to score for Canisius.

11:59: It’s Marist 13, Billy Baron 8 at the U12 timeout.

12:29: Dominique Raney’s corner three gets a lot of backboard. Baron gets a fast break after but hit shot is blocked against the board by Lewis. Some people wanted a goaltend but it looked good to me.

13:28: Baron gets  layup and 1, cutting it to 13-8.

14:02: Billy Baron doing a ton of work off the ball the last few possessions, hits a three to end the run. 11-5 Marist.

14:56: Marist’s run now 11-0 as Jim Baron takes timeout. 11-2 Red Foxes.

15:47: Neither team shooting particularly well early on. Marist leads 5-2 at the U16 timeout with free throws coming out of the break. Five turnovers for Canisius already, three for Marist.

17:34: Jay Bowie hits a 3 from the corner, 3-2 Marist. Manhertz steps out on offense.

19:07: Canisius steps out of bounds on its first possession but Marist called for a questionable over-and-back call on its possession. Baron opens the scoring, 2-0.

TIP: Jordan Heath wins the tip against Adam Kemp and we’re underway.

PREGAME: Pretty good crowd at the KAC, students too. We’ll call that the Niagara spillover effect.

PREGAME: It’s the Coaches vs. Cancer game today, which is why coaches are wearing sneakers with their suits.
