Canisius’ Crumpton breaks bone in foot

Canisius’ frontcourt took another hit Thursday as the team announced forward Jermaine Crumpton will be out 4-6 weeks following surgery to repair a broken bone in his right foot.

Crumpton, a redshirt freshman averaging 7.3 points per game, was injured in Sunday’s loss to Monmouth. He will have surgery on Friday.

Crumpton had been starting in place of second-leading scorer Phil Valenti, who went down with an ankle injury on Jan. 30. The Griffs are on a three-game losing streak since Valenti’s departure.

With the MAAC Tournament opening March 5, it’s likely both Crumpton and Valenti are done for the season. Crumpton was the team’s fourth-leading scorer.

Kevin Bleeker could be introduced to the starting lineup, if coach Jim Baron decides to replace Crumpton with another big, or the team could insert Jeremiah Williams and use three guards.

Canisius hosts Rider at 7 p.m. Friday.
